Out-of-Hours Funeral Operative (Casual / On-Call) – January.

The Role
We are an established, independent family funeral directors seeking calm, dependable individuals to join our out-of-hours removal team.
This is a role of real responsibility. When the phone rings at 2am, you may be the first representative of our business a family encounters at one of the most difficult moments of their lives. Attitude, empathy and professionalism matter far more than previous experience. Full training is provided.
On-Call Commitment (Important)
This is a from-home, on-call role, operating on a week-on / week-off rota, covering:
- Monday to Friday: 6:00pm – 6:00am
- Saturday & Sunday:Â 24 hours
During your on-call week, you must:
- Be contactable at all times
- Be able to attend our Dunton Green hub within 30 minutes when called
- Be prepared for calls to homes, care homes, hospices and similar settings
This structure suits people looking for additional income alongside other work, or those building experience within the funeral profession.
 What You’ll Be Doing
- Responding to out-of-hours calls during your on-call week
- Working as part of a two-person team
- Bringing deceased persons into our care with dignity, discretion and compassion
- Supporting and reassuring families in the moment
- Liaising professionally with healthcare staff and other professionals
- Completing simple records and paperwork
Who We’re Looking For
We are particularly keen to hear from people who are:
- Presentable and professional at all times
- Calm, empathetic and able to communicate gently with distressed families
- Reliable, punctual and trustworthy
- Possess a strong work ethic and take pride in doing things properly
- Comfortable working at night and attending unfamiliar environments
Physical capability for assisted lifting is required, but technique and training are provided.
Experience (Useful but Not Essential)
No prior funeral experience is required. However, backgrounds in the following can be helpful:
- Funeral services
- Care, hospice or healthcare roles
- Patient transport / private ambulance work
- Emergency, security, military or police roles
- Regular night or on-call work
Progression & Additional Work
- For those with experience, this role can form part of a wider casual arrangement, including:
- Daytime chauffeur or bearer duties
- Private ambulance or patient transport work
- For those without experience but with the right attitude, this role can be an entry point into the profession, with opportunities to progress into broader casual or even full-time funeral roles over time.
Requirements
- Full UK driving licence
- Aged 21 or over
- Right to work in the UK
- Able to commit to the on-call rota as described
