You don’t have to use a funeral director to arrange a funeral in England, and some families choose to lead it themselves. Others are using a funeral director further away, perhaps near where the person lived before moving to Kent, but would rather choose the coffin close to home.
People also come to us when a faith community is handling the service and only the coffin needs sourcing. Or when a natural burial is planned and the family wants something woven from willow or made from bamboo or wool.
If you’re thinking about your own funeral rather than one that’s coming up, a pre-paid funeral plan is usually a more practical way to record your coffin choice than buying one now. We’re happy to talk through both.
It usually starts with a phone call or a visit to our funeral home at 43 Western Road. Our first question is where the funeral is taking place, because that decides which coffins will be accepted. Burial grounds and crematoria each set their own rules.
Wrotham’s parish burial ground is a good local example. Its regulations allow only coffins of wood, wicker or other light materials in its earth graves. Crematoria, meanwhile, won’t take a coffin with metal handles or fittings.
At the funeral home you can see sample coffin ends in each material and feel the finishes for yourself, rather than choosing from a photograph. Once you’ve decided, we’ll give you a written quote, then agree how the coffin reaches you.

What you pay for a coffin bought on its own depends on the material, the size, the finish and fittings you choose, and whether it needs delivering. A coffin sold separately can also be charged differently from one supplied as part of a funeral we’re arranging. That’s why we set out the full amount in writing before you agree to anything.

Yes. Maidstone Borough Council asks families arranging a cremation at Vinters Park themselves to book an appointment with its bereavement team. The coffin has to be suitable for cremation, with no metal handles or fittings. We’ll show you which of our coffins meet that.
