Snodland

Snodland, Kent: A Riverside Town Rich in History and Community Spirit

Snodland might not shout for attention. But give it a moment, and it draws you in.

Set between the soft rise of the North Downs and the winding River Medway, this small Kent town holds far more than meets the eye. It’s the kind of place where every street hints at a story. A town where chalk hills, water, and industry shaped life for generations, and still quietly do.

There’s a calm confidence here. You’ll find it in the old brickwork of cottages, the hum of local life, and the pride people take in their community. Places like Holborough Lakes show how Snodland continues to grow without losing its roots. It’s not flashy. But it feels lived in, loved, and layered.

Snodland doesn’t need to pretend. It knows exactly what it is, and that’s what makes it special.

Finding Your Way: Getting To and Around Snodland

Snodland may be small, but it’s surprisingly easy to reach. Its position between major roads and the River Medway means it’s always been a place people pass through, or settle in. Today, that strong connectivity continues by car, train, and bus.

By Car

The A228 links Snodland directly to both the M20 and M2. From there, it’s just a short hop to towns like West Malling or Rochester.

  • From the M20 (eastbound): Exit at Junction 4. Follow signs for the A228 towards Rochester. At the roundabouts, go straight towards Snodland town centre.
  • From the M20 (westbound): Also exit at Junction 4. Take the third exit and continue via the A228 as above.
  • To reach the medical centre area: Use Castle Way/A228 after the first roundabout, then Malling Road at the second.
  • From the M2/A2 (from Gravesend/London): Exit at Junction 2. Follow the A228 through Halling until you reach the Holborough Lakes roundabout, then head into town.

By Train

Snodland Railway Station [3] is on the Medway Valley Line, with trains running north to Strood and south to Maidstone West and beyond [4].

  • Connections: Strood offers links to London St Pancras via high-speed services. Some journeys may require a change.
  • Station features: Limited staffed hours, ticket machines, stoma-friendly toilets (when staffed), heated indoor waiting area (when open), and cycle parking. No Wi-Fi or café is available.
  • Accessibility: Step-free access is available to both platforms, though crossing between them uses a level crossing or footbridge with steps.

By Bus

Snodland is well served by a couple of key routes, plus wider local networks.

  • Route 71 (Arriva): Connects Maidstone to Snodland via the Co-op, Holmesdale School, and the Clock Tower [5].
  • Route 151 (Nu-Venture): Runs from Chatham and Strood through Halling and Snodland to West Malling and Kings Hill [6].
  • Other providers: Go-Coach and others serve the broader West Kent area.

Bus services are useful but may require planning outside peak hours. Most residents still rely on cars for day-to-day travel.

Discovering Snodland: Local Gems and Green Spaces

There’s more to Snodland than bricks and chalk. It’s a place where nature and community come together (click this link), offering green spaces, scenic walks, and local spots that bring people together.

Nature’s Escape: Leybourne Lakes Country Park

Just south of Snodland sits Leybourne Lakes Country Park [7] [8]. Once gravel pits, it’s now a much-loved area of lakes, meadows, and woodlands. Managed by Tonbridge & Malling Leisure Trust (tmactive), it covers around 230 acres and has held a Green Flag Award for more than 15 years.

There’s something here for everyone:

  • Smooth, accessible paths for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
  • A modern café with lake views
  • A large play area for children near the café.
  • Leybourne Lakes Watersports Centre [9] offering stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, windsurfing, and scuba diving.
  • Open water swimming and SUP Yoga
  • Fishing at the Larkfield Complex for carp, pike, and tench.
  • Wildlife watching, nature walks, and organised family activities all year round.
  • Events like Malling parkrun, pond dipping, bat walks, and triathlons.

Whether you’re after a peaceful stroll or something more active, this park is a real asset to the area.

Walks and Views: Trails That Start from Town

Snodland is perfect for walking, from riverside rambles to hillside climbs.

  • Medway Valley Walk: This long-distance path runs close to Snodland, following the river from Tonbridge to Rochester [10].
  • Snodland Community Trails: These waymarked walks start right in the town centre. Two standout routes are:
    • ‘Lakes & Marshes’ loop — an easy walk around Leybourne Lakes and Holborough Marshes [11].
    • ‘Farms & Downs’ loop — a tougher climb through fields and woodland that connects to the North Downs Way [12]. Expect big views and quiet, chalky paths.
  • For official walking routes and footpaths, both Kent County Council and Medway Council provide maps and updates [13].

You can go for a gentle lakeside stroll or take on a full day’s hike, all from the edge of town.

Community Spaces and Historic Landmarks

Snodland isn’t just green, it’s sociable too – article. Local facilities help people connect.

Snodland Community Centre

On Paddlesworth Road, this venue is run by the Snodland Community Association [14] [15]. It hosts sports classes, church groups, private parties, and more.

Facilities include:

  • A large main hall with a stage (seats up to 300 theatre-style)
  • A licensed bar and modern kitchen
  • Meeting rooms like Downsview Lounge and Paddlesworth Rooms

It’s a busy place, filled with the rhythm of everyday local life.

Local History

While the Roman villa site near town remains unexcavated and closed to the public, some buildings still show Snodland’s deep roots:

  • All Saints Church near the river, still active and steeped in history [16]
  • Woodlands Farmhouse, a Grade II* listed 15th-century building
  • Mulberry Cottages, an old Wealden hall house from around 1450

These are privately owned, but their presence gives the town a real sense of time.

Parks and Sports Grounds

Snodland Town Council manages local open spaces, including:

  • Nevill Park
  • The Recreation Ground
  • Willowside
  • Cricket Meadow and Potyns sports ground [17]

Local clubs add even more energy. The town has:

  • Snodland Town Football Club [18]
  • Snodland Boxing Club
  • Snodland Community Cricket Club [19]
  • A well-regarded Chess Club

Holborough Lakes [20] [21] also brings its own amenities, including a residents’ gym and walking routes.

And when the calendar rolls around, the town comes alive, with events like the Carnival, Fireworks Night, and Christmas Lights switch-on.

Everyday Life in Snodland: Pubs, Parks, and Schools

Snodland might be small, but it covers the essentials. From good schools to familiar pubs, it’s a town where daily life ticks along with a strong local rhythm.

Local Flavours: Pubs and Clubs

You won’t find chain bars or flashy venues here. What you will find is a handful of traditional pubs and social clubs where locals come to relax, chat, and enjoy a drink.

  • The Freemasons Arms (Malling Road) [22]: A classic local pub. No frills, just a proper pint and a friendly atmosphere.
  • The Monks Head (Constitution Hill) [23]: Listed in CAMRA records, though it may no longer serve real ale [24].

For a deeper sense of local life, Snodland also has two long-standing working men’s clubs:

  • Snodland WMC (Holborough Road): Offers pub sports, drinks, and event space. Reviews mention a welcoming vibe but limited parking [25] [26].
  • Ham Hill WMC (Malling Road): Another relaxed spot for members to gather [27].

While neighbouring towns like West Malling and Rochester offer more choice for eating out, Snodland’s venues remain central to its social life, steady, familiar, and welcoming.
