Why we collect Easter eggs

As an independent, family-run funeral director in Sevenoaks and the surrounding areas, Welham Jones has always believed in being an integral part of the local community. While our daily work involves funeral arranging and supporting families through emotional distress, we also see the wider challenges facing our neighbours.

The reality of food insecurity in the UK is sobering. According to the United Kingdom Food Security Report, 2024, the proportion of ‘food secure’ households has steadily decreased from 93% in 2020 to 90% in 2023. Furthermore, food bank usage is on the rise; with 3.3% of all households using a food bank and 1.4% having used one in the last 30 days, up from just 0.9% moderate increase from the previous year.

At Easter, the disparity becomes even more apparent. While it is estimated that the average child receives approximately £56 worth of Easter gifts, many families are struggling just to put basic meals on the table. We believe every child deserves a visit from the Easter Bunny, regardless of their circumstances.

Beyond food banks, we also extend our appeal to local hospitals and the 53 children’s hospices currently operating across the UK. With almost 100,000 children living with life-limiting conditions, a small gesture like a chocolate egg can provide a much-needed moment of joy during a difficult time.

 Where we will donate to

We are proud to support various local causes throughout West Kent and South East London. The donations collected at our branches will be distributed to local food banks, hospices, and hospital wards to ensure that children in our communities can share in the magic of the season. These charities include: Demelza CharitySevenoaks LarderSevenoaks Welcomes RefugeesChurch of the Good Shepherd Food Bank Borough GreenNourish Tunbridge Wells, and Sustain food bank at Tonbridge Baptist Church.

By working closely with care homes, local clergy, and community organisers, our family team ensures that your generosity reaches those who need it most. Whether you are visiting us to discuss pre-paid funeral plans or simply passing by one of our high street locations, your contribution makes a tangible difference.

How you can donate

Supporting our Easter egg appeal is simple. We invite you to drop off a chocolate Easter egg at any of our seven local branches. To ensure we have enough time to distribute the gifts to the children before the holiday weekend, please bring your donations to us by Friday 27 March.

You can find your closest branch and check opening times via the links below:

Whether it is a small gesture for a child in a food bank or a treat for someone in hospital, your kindness helps us celebrate life and community in all its forms.

By donating an Easter egg to one of our local branches, you are helping to bring a smile to a child’s face and supporting the vital work of our local food banks and hospices.
