Chislehurst lies in the London Borough of Bromley, with a postcode of BR7, and is located between Bromley in the west, Orpington to the south, Sidcup to the east and Mottingham and New Eltham to the North. Though it is in Greater London, should you ask its residents, they are most likely to say they “live” in Kent, just like those residents of Orpington.
Along its High Street and the Royal Parade, Chislehurst has a wide selection of independent shops, including a large Sainsbury’s supermarket.
Eating and Drinking : Chislehurst has a number of pubs, bars and restaurants to choose from. If you are looking for a nearby pub for a pint and a spot of lunch, pop into the gastropub, the Imperial Arms Coach House Bistro & Function Room, where you will be able to try their amazing food, exquisite wines, lagers, ales and spirits. If you love seafood, then Denny’s Seafood Restaurant is a must. Located in the former waiting room of Chislehurst train station, you will be treated to freshly caught seafood and fish and seasonal ingredients. The Bull’s Head is very much like the old coaching inn of the past but brought into the 21st century. A hotel with 15 stylish rooms, a pub and restaurant. Though there are many more places to eat, we thought we would finish with the Cote Brasserie – Chislehurst were they serve French and European cuisine.
There is much to do from you base, not only do you have easy access to central London via the nearby railway station, but you have many local places to visit. Probably the best well known is Chislehurst Caves.
Chislehurst Caves are labyrinth of man-made tunnels covering 22 miles and up to 30 metres below the ground. Going back to early as the middle of the 13th century to the early 19th century, the caves were dug for chalk that was used in brick making and flints to fire the tinderboxes and flintlock guns. During World War Two the caves were used as air raid shelters during the Blitz and were the deepest air raid shelters outside of London. In the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s they were used to hold dance and concerts.
If you just want to walk, you are spoilt for choice, you have Scadbury Park, Chislehurst Recreation Ground, Walden Recreation Ground, and Petts Wood and Hawkwood, all in easy walking distance.
If golf is your passion, then you will be in your element at the Chislehurst Golf Club. Set within 70 acres of parkland with a stunning clubhouse in a period Grade II listed building…golf heaven!
Rail: Chislehurst station has excellent connections to all the main south London stations, including London Bridge, Waterloo, Charing Cross, Blackfriars, Canon Street and Victoria.
Bus: From Chislehurst you can get to Bromley, Lewisham and North Greenwich via the routes 61, 161 and 273. There is even a night bus, the N136, which runs to Oxford Circus.
Road: You are only a 15 minute car journey away from the M25.
Chislehurst has a number of good primary and secondary state and independent schools. These include Edgebury Primary School and Bullers Wood School for Girls. You then have Coopers Technology College and Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication which is well known for media, including photography, animation, music and online media.
