Situated in the London Borough of Bromley, Orpington is a town on the borders of south east London and Kent. Though if you were to ask any of its residents where they live, London or Kent, they would strongly say Kent! Though actually, this is incorrect…but you would be a brave person to say this! With a population of over 90,300, Orpington also contains the areas of Chelsfield, Crofton, Farnborough, Locksbottom and Petts Wood.
Did you know that there is a breed of chicken named after this BR6 town – The Orpington.
A Roman villa, Crofton Roman villa, was occupied for 260 years, from 140 AD to 400 AD and was the centre of large farming estate. It was not until 1036, that Orpington was officially mentioned, but then it was called Orpedingetune, and then in 1086, it is mentioned in the Doomsday book where it records Orpington’s population of between 75-100, what they did and what they owned.
