Your Guide to Lower Green, Pembury: Community Life & Welham Jones Support

Lower Green is a small hamlet within Pembury in Kent. It’s part of a group of hamlets, including Upper Green, Romford, Hawkwell, and Bo-Peep, that historically combined to form what is now Pembury village. Lower Green itself dates back before the Norman Conquest [more tips here]. The area was permanently settled around 800 AD by families from Nettlestead, who previously visited only seasonally for grazing livestock. The landscape still reflects this past; local greens and commons trace back directly to old farming practices.

A Little Bit About Lower Green’s History

Lower Green’s history goes way back. Around the year 800, families from nearby Nettlestead decided it was a good spot to settle down. Before then, they’d just been popping by with livestock for seasonal grazing. Over the centuries, the hamlet became part of what we now know as Pembury, along with places like Upper Green and Bo-Peep. You know, the kind of place that’s grown from old wood pastures into the peaceful village you see today.

You can even see the history in names like Pembury, originally from Saxon times, meaning “the place of Pepping’s people.” Cool, right [1] [2]?

Lower Green Community Life

Living here means plenty of green spaces to enjoy. You’ve got the Lower Green Recreation Ground, perfect for the kids or a quick kickabout. Right next door, there’s Marshley Harbour Wood. Honestly [3] [4], 213-acre woodland managed by the Kent High Weald Project, it’s lovely for a quiet stroll or even a bit of wildlife spotting.

Need a place to meet people? Head to the Red Lion on Lower Green Road, Rusthall [5] [6]. The pub’s licence goes back to 1415. Inside, you still see the old oak beams and a broad fireplace. Local groups book the rooms for quiz nights, music sets, and part of the Tunbridge Wells Fringe Festival [7] each year.

Local Community Halls and Schools

There’s no shortage of places to meet up and get involved. Pembury Village Hall on the High Street is your go-to for anything from amateur dramatics to exercise classes.

And if you’re looking at schools, Pembury Primary School is right here on Lower Green Road, really handy for local families. Nearby, there’s also Langton Green Primary School, another great option.

Getting Here From Lower Green

If you’re popping into our Tunbridge Wells branch, it’s straightforward enough. By car, leave Lower Green by the short access lane and head west for roughly a third of a mile. Turn right onto Maidstone Road, follow it for about 0.2 miles, then take the left slip onto the A228 (Pembury Northern Bypass). Stay on the bypass for just under two miles. When you reach the roundabout, go straight ahead, the road becomes the A264 Pembury Road and leads you into Tunbridge Wells. After around 1.6 miles, turn right into Calverley Park Gardens (B2249). Almost immediately, turn right again onto Calverley Road (still the A264). A few seconds later you’ll hit a small roundabout: take the first exit onto Crescent Road. Welham Jones Funerals & Memorials is on the right at number 39.

The bus is an easy option too, Arriva 6 or Go-Coach 208 will drop you close by. If you prefer, local taxis can get you here in about 10 minutes.

Anyway, whatever the reason, just know we’re here whenever you need us.
